Tom McGrath to Direct 'RentaGhost,' With Ben Stiller Starring

Jul 30, 2012

Tom McGrath, known for directing animated features like Megamind and the Madagascar franchise, is getting ready to make his live-action debut behind the camera.

Variety reports, he is in talks to direct the comedy RENTAGHOST for Fox, with Ben Stiller starring. The film would re-team the pair, who worked together on all three of the Madagascar projects -- Stiller voiced Alex the lion.

RENTAGHOST was originally set up at Warner Bros., where Russell Brand was attached to star. Fox took over the project last fall and set Stiller to star soon after.

Based on the BBC children's comedy that ran between 1976 and 1984, it "centers on a recently deceased 27-year-old man who, determined to be more productive in the afterlife, creates RentaGhost, leasing ghouls, ghosts and other specters to the living."

Writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum) are on board to pen the screenplay.
